commuter car entering the city must have at least three people in it. president obama and governor romney's renewed campaign come as the latest polls show president obama lead big six points in eye but locked in a tight balle with romney in new hampshire and wisconsin. nearly all interviews conducted before hurricane sandy, which just might end up being the defining moment of this election. joining me today to discuss all of this and more, msnbc political analyst and national affairs editor for "new york" magazine, john heilemann. msnbc political analyst and executive editor of msnbc.com, richard wolffe. msnbc political analyst, jonathan alter of bloomberg view, and msnbc political analyst and former dnc, karen finney, hopefully joining us shortly. john, i go to you first. in terms of sandy being an inflection point, game changer, if you will, a term we do not toss around lightly, are we -- is it -- is it a game changer? can you prognosticate that far? do you think the president is stronger coming out of the sandy response as a candidate? >> look, there's no question that if you think abo

to likely voters. president obama 44%. governor romney, 51%. why after all this time does governor romney beat president obama when it comes to the question of who could best handle the economy? >> well, first of all, candy, there's a plethora of polls out there. >> a lot of them sort of show this, david. >> i actually prefer the cnn polls. i like the one you put out on friday where we were ahead in ohio and in states like ohio and elsewhere people know the reality, which is the president took tough steps to save our economy from freefall to save the auto industry, which governor romney would not have done, and he has a vision of how to move this economy forward. that will rebuild the middle class. that will -- and governor romney who runs around this country now saying i represent change doesn't represent change. he what he represents is a return to a failed task. >> still more feel think the governor would do better with the economy than the president. >> in that particular poll -- in that particular poll, candy, that may be the case, but in reality that's not the case. if you look at w

"/nbc/marist. governor romney, 44%. in wisconsin, president obama at 49%. in new hampshire, president obama at 49%, governor romney at 47%. so the good news is that's a lead for president obama, from the democratic are perspective. the bad news is he's been dropping. in iowa, that lead was eight points, now it's six. in wisconsin, that lead is now three points, it was six. new hampshire, it was a seven-point lead, it's now two. so if you actually map it, it's shrinking very dramatically five days left until the election. are you worried about that trend? you must be. >> not at all. not at all. we had always anticipated that there would be a very, very close race. but i think, basically, what it's going to boil down to is who do we trust. and i think the polling will show that the american people trust this president. i think when you've got a situation where the president is either basically tired or leading in all of these battleground states, you've got, just the eyes will tell you that some of them are going to come out in his favor, if not all. but i think the president clearly, you've got to

's a consequential difference. they know that president obama is going to increase taxes, where, where governor romney is not if he's elected president. that's an important issue distinction. coming into the last debate, the annenberg survey showed that the public thought that governor romney was more likely to take the country into a war, than was president obama. but the public also believed that president obama had gone around the world apologizing. now in the last debate, governor romney reassured that he was not as likely to take people into war as they had thought in that debate. and i think that was a calculated strategy on his part. now, you could say, "and it was illegitimate. you secretly know that he was more likely." but nonetheless, what we can measure is whether they get what he said he was going to do in the context. and i think that president obama responded to the apologizing around the world claim in a number of ways that were effective as well. and i think one of the things that we can say about debates making a difference is that, had there been debates in the goldwater/john

. with president obama and governor romney headed into the final week, we want to track where the race stands with senators from four key swing states. republican rob portman of ohio, who played president romney in the debate represent and 18 electoral votes are in play en a state obama won in '08, by 4.6 points and now leads 2.3 points in the latest real clear politics average of recent polls and republican ron johnson of wisconsin, 10 electoral votes at stake and obama won by almost 14 points, last time, and, is now leading by 2.3. and democrat mark warner of virginia, obama won its 13 electoral votes by 6 points, four years ago and now is tied with romney. and, democrat mark udall of colorado, obama won the 9 electoral votes last time by nine points and the race there is now dead even. senator portman, let's start with the state i guess most people think may decide the race, that is ohio. the obama camp says they have the big edge in early voting in your state and also note that they have 137 campaign offices around the country, and the romney camp has only 39. >> well, chris, first of all

that to the way the republicans treated barack obama and you see the total hypocrisy of that claim. >> governor, philadelphia aside obama's biggest drop off has been among middle to upper class suburban women. why do you think that is? you know the state. >> because the economy is not doing well. pennsylvania's economy has taken a nose dive since i left. when i left -- well truth is truth. when i left we were 7.4% unemployment, almost two points below the national average. we're now above the national average by a third of a point. so, it's significant. but the economy has not done well and suburban women are conscious of the economy. you'll know right away in pennsylvania, you don't have to look far to see whether this will be a close race. just look at the turnout in philadelphia. if the turnout approaches '08 levels it's katie bar the door, philadelphia will give obama so many votes there's no way the rest of the state can come pen st. two the philadelphia suburbs. unless mitt romney is running close to even in a couple of those four suburban or five suburban counties, he has no chance to wi
